Professor Carlos Zubaran Jr. is a psychiatrist and the medical director of Sunnyside Clinic in Hornsby, a northern suburb of Sydney. He holds a conjoint professorial appointment with the School of Medicine at Western Sydney University and is also the clinical director of the Drug and Alcohol Program at St. John of God Hospital in North Richmond, Australia.

Professor Zubaran graduated at UFRGS Faculty of Medicine, a centenarian and most reputable institution in Southern Brazil. After having obtained his specialty in Psychiatry and a PhD in Biological Sciences, he completed research programs at the Institute of Psychiatry and Maudsley Hospital in London (Behavioural Pharmacology), as well as postdoctoral programs at Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute (Substance Use) and at the International Center for Mental Health, at Elmhurst Hospital and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (Cultural Psychiatry) in New York City. Prof. Zubaran also obtained a Master’s Degree in Health Management from the University of New South Wales.

Professor Zubaran is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and member of the its Faculty of Addiction Psychiatry. He has authored more than one hundred publications including peer-reviewed manuscripts, research abstracts, book chapters, editorial comments and articles in the media. He was the recipient of the World Psychiatric Association International Fellowship Award (1996), the US National Institute on Drug Abuse Distinguished International Scientist Award (2009), and the Eric Roger Wroclawski Award (2013). Professor Zubaran was the invited speaker for the Elysio de Moura Oration at Coimbra University in 2014.
